I cut the cable cord
I did it. I told Comcast “Nope, I don’t want to give you $120 each month anymore.” And I canceled my cable/DVR service.
Now, I’m the happy owner of AppleTV.
What is AppleTV, you ask? I didn’t know either, don’t worry. I had a vague idea of what it was, but I didn’t know how cool it was until my brother got it for my dad as a Father’s Day gift; since then, I’ve toyed around with the idea of turning my own TV into an Apple product. I’m so glad I did.
AppleTV is a tiny box that hooks up via HDMI cable to your TV. It connects wirelessly to your Internet to give you access to all the apps you need: Hulu, HBOGo, ESPN, iTunes, Photos, Netflix, Vimeo, YouTube, and more. And the best feature of all is AirPlay: you can mirror the TV with anything you’ve got pulled up on any other Apple product in the house. Want to play a show on Amazon Prime streaming? Just mirror your Macbook. Want to play your Spotify playlist through the TV speakers while showing a slideshow of your photostream? Done.
(Incidentally, do you pay for Spotify premium yet? Because you should.)
I’m in love with it. I watch highlighted clips on HuluPlus from late night talk shows without the commercials. I am able to watch Orange is the New Black (um, AWESOME show). And it was a one-time cost of $94.99.
Full disclosure: The only thing that has annoyed me so far is that some programs on Hulu Plus are not “permitted” to be played through your AppleTV. Networks limit the shows you can watch actually on a TV — watch them on a computer all you want, but they won’t even show up in the Hulu App on the AppleTV.
This is annoying, but it is easily circumnavigated with the AirPlay feature I mentioned earlier: simply cue it up on your computer, hit AirPlay to mirror the TV with your MacBook, and you’re good to go.
The second issue I had was that my MacBook—although it was from 2011 or later (as specified by Apple)—wasn’t making AirPlay available: An easy(ish) fix was to download the newest version of Mountain Lion from the Apple App store, and $20 later, I was good to go.
Do you have AppleTV? Do you like it?
*Disclaimer: Apple gives me no money to review its products even though it totally should.
